Origin[]
Andrew Douglas Nolan and Luzia Karamante, a famous actress, married and gave birth to twins. Expecting them to inherit their good looks, they were horrified to see them both horribly deformed. Nolan later died in a space ship crash. Rumors floated that it was a suicide from shame. Karamante named them Andrew and Douglas, after their late father.
The Nolans were raised in secrecy. Although Douglas was quiet and introverted, Andrew was the opposite and wanted to experience the world. Both soon discovered they had to ability to transform into living iron. While Cosmic Boy was touring the galaxy, he encountered Nolan and decided to make him a member of the Legion of Superheroes without a formal audition. Nolan took the codename Ferro Lad.
Chain of Command[]
Ferro Lad was introduced to the rest of the Legion on Winath in the wake of a cosmic storm. His powers were useful in repairing structures and aiding in Bouncing Boy's strategy. Even Lightning Lad came around to accepting him.
Sundown[]
Months later, Ferro Lad was called on to act as a conduit to focus Lightning Lad and Cosmic Boy's powers into a focused blast in order to destroy the Sun-Eater. Ferro was unable to handle the stress of the power and missed the core. To redeem himself, he later penetrated the Sun Eater alone and detonated the solar transducer to save the universe. The Legion erected a massive golden statue in his honor at Legion Headquarters.
Powers[]
- Organic Iron Transformation: Ferro Lad has the superhuman ability to convert the tissue of his entire body into an organic iron. He is able to transform into this armor-like state at will the process is virtually instantaneous and remain in that form for an as yet undetermined amount of time. Once in his iron form he remains so until he consciously wills himself back to normal. If he is rendered unconscious, however, he spontaneously reverts to his normal form. While in the armored state, Ferro possesses the same degree of mobility that he does in his normal form. After transforming into Iron he possesses vast superhuman strength. A power in which Nolan described as "almost inconceivable", demonstrating it by bending a solid steel bar, at least 1.5 inches in diameter. Also, while in his iron form his musculature produces considerably less fatigue toxins than the musculature of a normal human. In his iron form he is invulnerable to most forms of bodily harm. His armor is capable of withstanding ballistic penetration. He can survive extremes of temperature as well.
Equipment[]
- Legion Flight Ring: Like all Legionaries Ferro Lad wears a flight ring. It allows him self propelled flight and protection in the vacuum of space.

- Ferrum is Latin for "iron", thus Ferro Lad means "Iron Lad".
- "Fe", written in Ferro Lad's chest, is the chemical symbol of iron.
